NOTSENSIBLES – Im in Love With Margaret Thatcher – reissue 7″ single

After the success of their first single Death to Disco and debut album Instant Classic, the band were ready to record their second single. Written on the eve of the 1980 General Election by Roger, I’m in Love with Margaret Thatcher, was a throw-away 3 chord ditty.

Answering an advert in Sounds for an all-inclusive deal, the band travelled to Market Drayton to Redball Records. The bizarre story of the recording is a full chapter in itself. The single did well, reaching No2 in the indie charts. The Redball issue quickly sold out and was re-issued on the band’s own Snotty Snail records, distributed by Rough Trade.

When Thatcher died in April 2013, someone had an internet campaign ready to get Ding Dong The Witch is Dead to No 1 in the charts. The disgruntled Tories, looked for a song to compete and chose I’m in Love with Margaret Thatcher. Miraculously, it got to No 35 in the charts – (and could have got a lot higher if typical petty schoolboy squabbles hadn’t derailed the campaign).

This is a good quality re-press in a decent card sleeve with a plastic inner – as usual sensitively re-mastered by Gaz. Brand new (watch out for rip-off dealers selling it for double the price.)
